The Law of the Lid


Have you heard of the Law of the Lid?The brainchild of John Maxwell, an author and leadership expert, goes like this: ability is the lid that determines a person’s level of effectiveness. The lower an individual’s ability to lead, the lower the lid on his potential. The higher the individual’s ability to lead, the higher the lid on his potential.Many years ago, when I heard him speak at a conference, I immediately started reading, and using his books for personal growth and trainings. In his book, ‘The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership’ he discusses the Law of the Lid and this truth, when I first read it, made so much sense to me that I applied it to my own life and have repeated it many times to my clients.

When I was working my network marketing business and my team became stagnant, I learned that instead of wondering what was wrong with THEM, I had to look in the mirror and ask myself, ‘what do I need to change in myself right now to lift the lid?’It can be a very humbling process, but when you care about the people you are leading and influencing, you do the work.I now apply this law to my coaching business and feel so blessed to see that the work my clients are doing on themselves is getting noticed by their teams, employees, and their families.They work through their stuff. They get better. And it inspires their people take notice and want to be better too.

All of us are leaders in one form or another in our lives. It is important to remember this because we tend to quit on ourselves so fast when we think the change is just about us.Nothing could be further from the truth. Yes, you will reap the benefits but the bigger reward is the impact you are making and the legacy you can leave by changing just one person’s life through example!Here are three good questions to ask yourself that will raise your level of awareness around your leadership:
