Becoming a better leader

Becoming a better leader in your personal and professional life from nationally recognized speaker and author Carey Conley.I recently found and dusted off a book that I’ve had forever by Wayne Dyer, one of my all-time favorites. It’s called Wisdom of the Ages: 60 Days to Enlightenment. While this book covers a bunch of different topics, the one that called to me is on Leadership.

True leaders, he says, are not known by titles. It's only ego that loves titles. True leaders enjoy the trust of others, which is very different from enjoying the perks and flattery and power that ego insists that ego insists are the signs of being a leader. You need to give trust to others in order to receive trust to be a true leader in your own life and in the lives of others. Practice resisting the need to be recognized. Lead unobtrusively, offering trust whenever possible. What do I mean by this? A great leader does not lead with title, power, or by feeling like you deserve to be followed.More times than not, great leaders are followed because they are allowing other people to lead, and they are trusting them to do a good job. Now, more than ever, I believe we need to see this kind of leadership, especially with parenting. Helicopter parenting is a real thing. Often when we see our children encounter a problem, we try to swoop in and fix it for them.

But that’s not setting a good example for our kids. They need to learn how to problem solve for themselves, with some encouragement, of course. Here are three important steps you can take, starting today, that will help you become a better leader in your personal and professional life.
